Replacing a Model A Ford Cylinder Head and Head Gasket video Contents:
Steps you can perform either in your garage or along side the road if your head gasket fails.

  • Removing the hood, radiator rods, upper radiator hose and fan belt.
  • Protecting the radiator fins while you work.
  • Loosening headbolt nuts and removing the head.
  • Cleaning the engine block surface without scratching it.
  • How to be sure your new head is perfectly flat.
  • Moving the water pump to the new engine head.
  • Installing the head gasket with the proper side up.
  • Torqueing the head - following the proper sequence and working up in stages of torque.
  • Reinstalling the upper radiator hose, fan belt, radiator rods, and hood.
  • Retorqueing after the engine has gotten hot and then cooled down.
  • Retorqueing after a run along the road for a few miles.
  • Checking tightness of manifolds, carbeurator and exhaust pipe while you're under the hood.
  • Recommendations for radiator additives.

What do you do when your head gasket fails and you lose compression or exhaust starts to leak into your water jacket and the bubbles come out your radiator? What do you do when your oil turns milky? The usual answer is that you have to replace your head gasket...that seal between the engine block and the cylinder head on top of the engine.

The work is rather simple, if you have the right tools. You will need a set of sockets with a ratchet drive and an extension. You will also need a torque wrench, screw driver and box end wrench set. Special tools that can be handy include handles for lifting the head (that screw into the spark plug holes) or a commercially available head puller, a "head nut torque tool adapter" (or offset C-shaped ratchet extension) and a long-bar wrench (ratchet nut wrench) for turning the drive shaft to move pistons into position for cleaning. A gasket scraper and brass brush are also worth having on hand.
