Cell Phones

SB 1613 becomes effective on July 1, 2008. It prohibits the use of wireless telephones (cell phones) unless they are of the "hands-free" variety. Fine is $20.00 for the first offense and $50 for each subsequent offense. SB 33 also becomes effective on July 1, 2008. It prohibits any wireless telephone (cell phone) use by any driver under the age of 18.

Computer Professional Exemption

(SB 929); Sen: Cogdill

Lowers the hourly rate required to qualify for Computer Professional exemption from overtime from $41.00 to $36.00.

Earned Income Tax Credit Notice

(AB 650); Asby: Lieu & Jones

Requires every employer give every employee a written notice explaining the availability of Earned Income Tax Credit under the federal regulations. Incourages participation for those eligible. Notice must be delivered with the W2 earnings report each year.

Military Spouse Leave

(AB 392); Asby: Lieu

Requires qualified employer to allow a qualified employee who is a spouse of a qualified member of the Armed Forces, National Guard, or Reserves to take up to 10 days of unpaid leave during a qualified leave period. Effective immediately.

Pharmacists Alternative Workweek

(SB 812); Sen: Correa

Allows pharmacists in the Mercantile Industry (Wage Order #7) to adopt alternative workweek schedules allowed by Wage Order #4 (including the healthcare industry).

Social Security Number Display

(SB 929); Sen:

Permits the display of only the last four digits of an employee's Social Security Number on paychecks or any other document where the full number is not required by state or federal law.
